Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Hanford CA
1020 PM PDT Wed May 21 2025
.KEY MESSAGES...
1. A Fire Weather Watch in effect for the San Joaquin Valley,
the West Side Hills and the Sierra Nevada foothills from 11 AM
through 11 PM Thursday. This is due to expected winds of 15 to
20 mph, gusting up to 25 to 35 mph, and minimum relative
humidities of 5 to 15% in the afternoon.
2. Above average temperatures continue today and will warm
through the week. Minor to Moderate Heat Risk is expected
across the San Joaquin Valley.
3. There is a 50 to 80 percent chance for wind gusts greater
than 50 mph in the Mojave Desert Slopes on Thursday. A Wind
Advisory has been issued for the area from 5 PM Thursday through
11 PM Friday.
&&
.DISCUSSION...
A small trough is expected to pass through Northern California
tomorrow morning, which will lead to increased winds in the
Valley and Desert Slopes down in our CWA. Ahead of this trough
is a slight ridging pattern that will cause temperatures this
afternoon to be above normal for this time of year. Highs in the
Valley are likely to reach the mid 90`s with triple digits not
likely to occur.
Along with these temperatures is lowered afternoon relative
humidity, which when combined with the increased winds, will
lead to increased fire danger tomorrow. A Fire Weather Watch has
been issued from 11 AM through 11 PM Thursday. There will also
be strong winds along the Mojave Desert Slopes during the
passage of this trough, with sustained winds of 20 to 30 mph and
gusts up to 50 mph. A Wind Advisory has been issued for the
time period of 5 PM Thursday through 11 PM Friday, though the
strongest winds are expected in the afternoon both days.
After the passage of the trough on Thursday, weather conditions
are expected to calm, though afternoon RH`s are expected to
remain low throughout the period. Temperatures are expected to
remain fairly consistent as well, with a slight warm up on
Sunday with the passage of a small ridge.
&&
.AVIATION...
06Z Update:
Gusty conditions are possible across the San Joaquin Valley,
with a 20-30% chance for wind gusts greater than 25 knots
after 18Z Thursday. There are more favorable chances in the
Mojave Desert Slopes, with a 40-60% chance for 30 knot gusts
through through 12Z. Otherwise, VFR conditions will prevail for
the next 24 hours across the Central California Interior.
